The study, which comes out of research from JAMA Internal Medicine, says these doctors suffer just due to the fact that they have children.
One factor affecting this issue is a system of double standards. Mothers reportedly face lowered expectations, lack of support during pregnancy and limited opportunities for advancement. One doctor who responded to the JAMA study said that she was not invited to extra work activities because her colleagues assumed she would opt out due to having children at home. Mothers also commented that they feared reprisal if they were to report the discrimination they faced.
Discrimination hurts both mothers and patients under their care. One woman reported that her orders were not followed during an emergency situation. Another mother stated that a flight attendant turned down her offer to provide care for another passenger. Other similar incidents have been reported in the news. In order to combat these issues, initiatives that promote gender equality need to be developed.
Women who face workplace discrimination may be able to obtain compensation from their employers or other responsible parties. A lawyer may carefully analyze the circumstances of a discrimination claim and recommend a legal strategy. In some cases, a settlement can be reached out of court.
